[The original article can be read at http://www.robertbellah.com/articles_5htm. After pointing out that in the inaugural speech of President John F. Kennedy on Jan. 21, 1961, there are three distinct references to God [two at the beginning and one at the end]. Bellah questions, "Considering the separation of church and state, how is a president justified in using the word ‘God’ at all?"
Vatican Declines SDACT Petition Regarding Union Recognition
Submitted by admin on Fri, 10/17/2008 - 11:14The Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education has declined the petition from the Scranton Diocese Association of Catholic Teachers (SDACT), which sought recourse to Bishop Joseph F. Martino’s decision that SDACT would not be recognized as a collective bargaining unit for teachers in Diocesan Catholic schools.

(George Washington refrained from promising to "shake up Washington" on the advice of his politically astute wife, Martha, who thought it would confuse voters if her husband appeared to be running against himself. George agreed and thus the phrase "inside the beltway" was born.)

Rosh Hashannah, Yom Kippur Soon To Be Observed

In Hebrew, Rosh Hashannah means "head of the year" or "first of the year," so it is commonly known as Jewish New Year. This year, Rosh Hashanah will be observed from sunset on Sept. 29 until sunset on Oct. 1. This year, the Jewish religious calendar year is 5769.
Mass Offered for Emergency, Public Safety Workers

"As the Lord Jesus offered Himself on the Cross for the salvation of all," the bishop said, "you bear witness to the sanctity of life through your strength and generous service." Following the mass, a light luncheon reception was held at nearby St. Mary’s Center, provided by the auxiliaries of local fire departments.
Prinicpals Named in Italian Mass at Cathedral

The offertory gifts were presented by Christopher and Ann DiMattio, Patrick Fricchione, Pat Guido and Debbie Trozzolillo, while Johnathan Eboli, Stephen Eboli, Andrew Fazio Sr., Anthony Santoli, Angelo Valvano and Guy M. Valvano served as ushers.
Bishop Joseph F. Martino was the principal celebrant and homilist for the annual Mass in Italian offered on Sunday in St. Peter’s Cathedral, Scranton.

As this edition of the "Scranton Post" hits the streets, most of us will be settling into our fall routines after the Labor Day holiday.
We have enjoyed the long holiday weekend, made special by many personal and communal traditions, and we have used the short work week to orient ourselves to the schedule of labors that will characterize the coming month.

As discussed in the Aug, 1 issue of “The Scranton Post,” the First Amendment actually prohibits the making of any law concerning the establishment of religion, and thus it is often referred to as the “Non-Establishment Clause” of the First Amendment.
